Bio:
Cristina Hobbs is a painter and sculptor living in Sebastopol, California. She was born in Hanover, Germany and raised bi-lingual and bi-cultural by her German and Argentine parents. After studying in Germany and Argentina her path led to California. In 2011, she graduated from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in Painting. Hobbs divides her time between the wine regions of Northern California and Argentina. When she is not in her studio in Sebastopol, you can find her in her studio in Chacras, Mendoza or rushing to pick up one of her two young daughters. It is a life divided between two callings: motherhood and art.
Artist Statement:
Mark making is central in Hobbs’ work where each brush stroke brings about a reaction and leads to the next step. Although she derives her motifs and color palette from every day encounters and personal events, most of her paintings avoid narrative. They work at the edge between abstraction and figuration. In the end, they are observations of the everyday that at times go un-noticed; a celebration of the little things you see that stay in the back of your mind.
Her recent body of work is inspired by northern Californian nature. The colors, patterns, lushness and even feel of weather are translated in abstract forms.
Upon the birth of her second daughter, Louisa, the artist emerged herself into ceramics while still maintaining a painting practice. She hand builds sculptural objects in small scale. There is an overlap between her ceramics and paintings; textures, patterns painted or carved and a shared color palette. Both practices inform one another in a deep way.
Cristina has exhibited internationally. Her work is in many private collections.
